A Virtual Tour of Eldon Street

A Virtual Tour of Eldon Street

The app below has been developed by MBD and the Teenage Wildlife team. On there you can walk through Eldon Street and see the histories and stories from within a selection of buildings.

The locations included in the tour are Yorkshire Bank, McDonald’s, Famous Army Stores, the YMCA, Benji Harral’s, Neal’s Records, the Eldon Street public toilets, Mandela Gardens, Mr Wayne, Leslie Frances, J Lodges & Sons Ltd, the bus station, the pubs Dolly’s and The Room, the street’s various cinemas and the past incarnations of Barnsley Civic.
In keeping with the retro themes of the project, the app has an aesthetic that is reminiscent of the 3D video games of the 1990s.

MBD create beautiful and emotive storytelling experiences using virtual reality, augmented reality and large-scale projection. They use a blend of traditional arts expertise and technological innovation to bring stories to life. Previous MBD projects have explored the 1620 Mayflower voyage, a history of UK graffiti and Shoulders Back, Head High, a celebration of the life and legacy of LGBTQ+ activist Marsha P Johnson.

Eldon Street of the 1960s

The video below was commissioned by Barnsley Council as part of the wider Eldon Street Heritage Action Zone project. Created by Martin Moss of Dextra Visual, the digital reconstruction uses local archives and cutting-edge digital technology to transport us right back to the Eldon Street of the 1960s. Offering a glimpse into the lives of the teenagers, shoppers, employees and business owners that made Eldon Street their home, the animation also offers a more focused exploration of the Civic (showing the library) and the Odeon.

Barnsley Council and Dextra Visual’s last Heritage Action Zone project was short-listed for Best Use of Digital in the prestigious national Museum & Heritage Awards 2023. The video recreats the ironworks, collieries, workshops and village streets of a Victorian period Elsecar.
